The Wild Robot is a PG rated movie about a robot named Roz who lands on a deserted island. She attempts, and fails, to gain a task to satisfy her programming, as the animals are wary of the robot. Roz encounters a bear and is chased through the forest where she trips and ends up landing on a goose’s nest, killing the mother and destroying all but one of the eggs.
Roz takes raising the egg as her task. A fox named Fink tries to steal the egg from Roz but fails, and ends up helping Roz raise the gosling, who was named Brightbill. Fink states that Roz must raise Brightbill by feeding him, teaching him to swim, and teaching him to fly before the annual migration.
The movie is only 1 hour and 42 minutes long, and would have benefited from being 2 hours, as the movie felt a little rushed in parts and it would have been nice to see how Brightbill grows up rather than simply wood carvings of him growing up to show the passage of time. However, as some of the audience will be younger children, the movie cannot be too long so as to keep their attention. Also, there is a part of the movie later on where Roz is starting to fall into disrepair, but this does not lead to Roz not functioning during the movie.
The Wild Robot’s visuals are beautiful, showcasing the natural beauty of nature. From the moss that grows on Roz to the vast ocean and rocky beach, everything in the movie is stunning to look at.
The villain of the movie did far too much telling and not showing, preferring to say that she is evil rather than showing how she is evil. Showing your story instead of telling is important because the audience would like to figure out things themselves. After all, monologues are quite boring. This may have been done to help the younger audience understand that she is the villain with the limited screen time (again, another reason the movie should have been 2 hours), though I feel like this was already effectively done through her appearance as a sterile robot coming to collect her from the human utopia, contrasted to the state of disrepair Roz is in by this time of the movie.
Overall, I recommend this movie if you want an excuse to go eat some popcorn and a soft pretzel that isn’t too heavy.
