While the war between Palestine and Israel can go back as far as the 1940’s, people have now just recently brought attention to it. Right now in a small city of Palestine, Gaza is being attacked by the Israelis. Kids are being taken hostage and many are dying from the new living conditions. These include starvation and diseases. Both the land of Israel and Palestine are being bombed by missiles causing many of the people’s homes and land to be destroyed. Food is becoming harder to find each day, along with ‘safe zones’ that haven’t been bombed yet. Every couple of days the Palestinian people are having to move from new campsites that they’ve taken shelter at to get to a safe spot in Gaza that hasn’t been bombed yet. A young girl from Palestine documents her journey of what life is like while living in Gaza right now.
Bisan Owda is a 25-year-old journalist who publishes videos and pictures on the social media app, Instagram, to show the public the damage that has been done by the Israelis to their land. She has been able to gain a large following on her social media by connecting with the viewers, and many of them comment on her posts showing sympathy and support. Bisan had recently posted a picture of a rotten orange and said in the caption that citrus fruits are very hard to find in Gaza right now and that even though it was rotten, she had nothing else to eat for breakfast.
Bisan also made a short documentary film and posted it to her social media following. This film included images of the destroyed land in Gaza, updates about the war in real time, and interviews of some younger kids that had she had to evacuate the land with. In this interview Bisan had asked a little girl if she was afraid to go to Rafah, which is a city in Palestine that people were fleeing to. The little girl responded with ‘yes’ and Bisan asked ‘why’. The girl responded with, “Our dad who is there says; “I don’t want to bring you here. There’s nothing to drink there, not even salty water.”
In Bisan’s uploads she recently added a video talking about her favorite food called ‘Arayes’. Arayes is bread filled with the inside of a chicken or beef with onions and peppers in it. She did not have any of these materials, but she managed to get ahold of a canned corn beef and a couple of the younger kids that she had become friends with had given her some onions. As Bisan was looking around for bread to make the Arayes, a kind man came up to her to give her four pieces of bread which made her feel just a little bit normal by eating one of her favorite meals again during a time of pain and heartache. Christmas day in 2023, she made a vlog of herself saying, “The world is celebrating, and Bisan is evacuating. It’s not the same, we’re not the same unfortunately.”
Bisan’s story is just a small point of view of what the people from Gaza are having to endure during this time, so before the next time you eat your next meal, remember how valuable it can be to others.
